Liège -
Sclessin
Standard de Liège - Sporting de Charleroi 0-2
Eerste klasse Play offs, 23 May 2026
With our family we had been to Liege a few years ago for a day and with the famous steps De Bueren, the meatballs and the nice squares Liege has nowadays a nice old town. The history of an industrial steal city is a good basis for a football club like in the Ruhrgebiet in Germany. So a visit to Standard was already on my list for a while. At the last matchday of the play offs there is everything to play for: Standard can qualify for the barrage for a Conference League ticket in the so called "choc Wallon" in an almost sold out Sclessin. But they had to win... The match was very disappointing but there was a lot to see in the stadium: a lot of fireworks and fans provoking each other: Liège is the most passionate football city in Belgium. When the players entered the stadium there was already a lot of fireworks and during half time the fans of the visitors started wearing masks and throwed fireworks on the pitch and the match had to be suspended 5 minutes. In the late second half Charleroi scored twice and that was the moment we decided to leave the stadium. A wise decision with riots on the pitch after the match and outside the stadium. On social media you can find a lot about it. It was the end of the Season 2025/26 with for me a record of 15 new stadiums visited: 5 in Belgium, 4 in my own country, 3 in Germany, 2 in Spain and 1 in France. A fantastic football year.
