Excelsior - PSV 2-3

Eredivisie, 28 May 1987

In 1987 PSV could take the Eredivisie title away at Excelsior. Since the stadium of Excelsior was unsafe due to reconstruction work, the match was forbidden by major Bram Peper of Rotterdam. Therefore the match would be played in the Koel in Venlo. Since this is not so far from home my father took me there. Ruud Gullit just announced his legendary 17 million guilders transfer to AC Milan but scored the winning goal despite a 1-0 for Excelsior after just 20 seconds. As a kid the game was sometimes scary since many supporters where on the pitch and climbing across the fences. Pitch invasions like that were normal in the late eighties in the Netherlands. I would go back to the Koel, famous for the staircase to the dressing rooms, for a match of VVV only once. In April 1994: VVV-PSV 0-3.
