It is not without a reason that this website is called after the football temple of Bilbao. We did spend our family summer holiday in the North West of Spain: we started in the Basque cities San Sebastián and Bilbao, went to the mountains of Asturia (Picos de Europa) and ended up in Cantabria (Santander). For us it was the perfect family holiday including a football match. Bilbao itself is a great city because of the pinxtos you can eat in any bar, the Puppy, the Guggenheim Museum and just outside the center the Puente Vizcaya, a unique hanging bridge. In our weekend in Bilbao Athlétic Club played at home so little doubt to go to San Mamés. Despite the stadium is modern, the architecture is great, the place near the river is fantastic and the atmosphere created by the passionate Basque fans extraordinary. The pinxtos before and after the match complete the whole picture.The match of the day rather disappointing but that could not prevent naming San Mamés as the best football stadium in Europe to visit according to me and my son.
