Brussels -
Stade Joseph Marien
Union Saint Gilloise - KV Mechelen 3-0
Play offs Eerste klasse, 10 May 2026
The more than 100 year old Stade Joseph Marien in Brussels is because of its age one of the most hyped stadiums in Benelux these days. Union was one of the leading clubs in Belgium before the second world war but never played professional football until a few years ago. With help of an investor the club climbed up and became Belgian champion again in 2025. In one of the last play off games in 2026 they are competing with Club Brugge again for the title. I could get a 2nd hand ticket and went alone to Ukkel where I parked my car and took a 15 minutes drive through the Dudenpark to the stadium. Unfortunately the facade of the stadium is hidden behind a reconstruction skirt. After a hamburger with "ajuin" on the Brusselsesteenweg and a beer in the Club House I entered the main stand with its wooden benches. From there I had a great view on the pitch with the trees from the Dudenpark behind the stands where the Union Bhoys celebrated their party. This stadium is a true museum and must-see for every groundhopper in Benelux. Because it started to rain cats and dogs I was happy to be in the main stand today with a roof. The match itself was not so spectacular but a nice atmosphere.
